Stephen was appointed Chief Executive of the ISE in June 2013 following seven years as Head of Graduate Recruitment UK & Ireland at EY. His role is now responsible for market intelligence and thought leadership, for expertise and analysis, for policy direction and guidance to help members develop their early talent strategies. Working closely with the Joint CEO for membership & operations, we will be supporting all of our employer, education and supplier members to achieve best practice in early talent recruitment and development.
He has managed graduate recruitment and development programmes in both the private and public sectors and has extensive experience in the recruitment and development of students, both graduates and school leavers. He has worked closely with education throughout his career and is focused on the career development and employment of students.

Introducing our 1st Speaker: Shan Nelson-Palmer, Head of Early Careers, Lloyds
With over 15 years of demonstrable experience in Early Careers recruitment & development, Shan is currently Head of Early Careers at Lloyd’s providing strategic support and delivery to Lloyd’s and the market. Her passion is to build high performing teams and to nurture diverse talent throughout their career journey, whilst offering innovative business solutions to the Corporation.
Shan will give her expertise on Recruiting more diverse talent and encouraging social mobility.
Introducing our 2nd Speaker: Johanna Smith, Entry to Work Manager, Essex County Council
Johanna is currently the Entry to Work Manager within Essex County Council Resourcing Team. She has the privilege of being responsible for ensuring all their entry pathways are embedded into the organisation to ensure they meet their strategic aims whilst actively engaging with younger residents.
Essex County Council won the Early Career Pioneer Award at the 2022 Talent Acquisition Tiaras. “The judges were impressed with how Essex County Council’s “Entry to Work” Team drove change and took a holistic approach to bringing in all types of early talent and how it’s now embedded in their day to day running.”
Johanna will share her insights and experience on Breaking barriers for young autistic talent.

Johanna is currently the Entry to Work Manager within Essex County Council Resourcing Team. She has the privilege of being responsible for ensuring all their entry pathways are embedded into the organisation to ensure they meet their strategic aims whilst actively engaging with younger residents.
She takes pride in her a small and perfectly formed team, (50% are apprentices themselves) who oversee the operational side of the recruitment. Her background has always been in recruitment, originally in the agency world, then in-house for an automotive consultancy and most recently within Essex County Council.
Johanna absolutely loves her job and the variety it brings! She truly believes that with specifically designed Entry to Work pathways, they are breaking down the barriers to employment and allowing colleagues to thrive in a supportive working environment.
